Massachusetts officials have recently awarded $5.7 million in grants in order to support curbing gang violence.
The grants were made to fifteen communities, including Fitchburg, and eleven “research partners”, with Boston receiving $1.1 million. Other cities which received funding include Fall River, Haverhill, Brockton, Lawrence, Holyoke, New Bedford, Springfield, Pittsfield, Taunton and Holyoke.
The grants are geared towards creating partnerships between community organizations and police as opposed to pure law enforcement, and it has been effective, according to chief of the largest city police force in Massachusetts.
